Who We Are

The Focus on Asia Fukuoka International Film Festival was launched in 1991 as a major undertaking of “Asian Month” (renamed “Asian Party” in 2013), which began in 1990 to further deepen the circle of cultural exchange with Asia fostered through the “Asian Pacific Exposition”, held in 1989 to commemorate the centennial of the founding of the City of Fukuoka.

Our Film Festival Director and the Film Festival Secretariat staff, travel throughout Asia to research and select the motion pictures to be selected for festival exhibition. Film directors and starring actors and actresses to motion pictures selected for festival exhibition are invited as guests and participate in discussion sessions as well as symposiums, which are held to bring about a relationship of exchange with the audience of Fukuoka.

Because most of the motion pictures selected for exhibition make their Japanese Premiere at our Film Festival, they are presented with Japanese subtitles. The Film Festival also presents these films with English subtitles so that our guests, invited from throughout Asia and foreign students studying in Fukuoka, can watch and understand the motion pictures being exhibited. This has had the effect of giving international exposure to the motion pictures exhibited at our Film Festival, many of which are then shown in other parts of the world where they have received high acclaim. This in turn has transformed our Film Festival into a center from where motion pictures are introduced to the entire world. The Film Festival is also credited in assisting motion pictures pick up Japanese distribution as a result of their participation in our festival, as well as having Fukuoka become a film location site as a result of guests to the Film Festival taking a liking to the City of Fukuoka and choosing our city as their film location site for future films.

By virtue of being a unique film festival placing a focus on Asian films, our Film Festival every year attracts the attention of Asian film fans, the Japanese media and Japanese film distributors throughout Japan.

With the co-sponsorship and cooperation of the Japan Foundation Asia Center since 2015, our Film Festival will strive for further enrichment and success in the area of cultural exchange undertakings through our film exhibitions and events of public participation.

The Fukuoka City Public Library, which opened in 1996, has a film archive division involved in the research, collection, preservation and exhibition of Asian and Japanese cinematic masterpieces. The Fukuoka City Public Library Film Archive, as of March, 2016, has purchased preservation rights to 377 motion pictures previously exhibited at our Film Festival, the collection of which is preserved as precious Asian heritage of a visual and cultural nature.
