BREAKING NEWS! SYMPOSIUMS: DETAILS, CONTENT AND SCHEDULED SPEAKERS A FIRST FOR THE FILM FESTIVAL: A MASTER CLASS IN FILMMAKING!

Details, content and scheduled speakers for our symposiums to be held during our film festival, have been finalized. Also, as a first ever for our film festival, we will be holding “A Master Class in Filmmaking” to be presented by none other than film director Brillante Ma. Mendoza, the master of Philippine cinema! Don’t miss out on these great events!

We will be holding 3 symposiums packed with interesting topics, which you may consider important. Symposiums will only be held during and at our film festival. So why not attend?

THEME 1: Film Director ZHANG Lu: The Secret Recipe for Making “Fukuoka”
When: September 15 (Sun.)
Time: 15:00~. After the showing of “Fukuoka”, for about an hour and a half.
Scheduled Speaker: Zhang Lu, film director of “Fukuoka”.

THEME 2: “New Waves in Asia”: Are They Doing Well?

When: September 16 (Mon.)
Time: 15:00~. After the showing of “Lakbayan” (Journey), for about two hours.
Scheduled Speakers:
Brillante Ma. Mendoza (Film Director, “Lakbayan”). Adi Sumarjono (Producer, “Ten Seconds Before Sunrise”), Phuttiphong Aroonpheng (Film Director, “Manta Ray”), Joe Bacus (Film Director, “Markado, the Moon Devourer”)

“A Master Class in Filmmaking” by Film Director Brillante Ma. Mendoza

Lecturer, Brillante Ma. Mendoza

Brillante Ma. Mendoza, a film director and a master of Philippine cinema, has won awards from Cannes, Venice and Berlin, widely regarded as the top three international film festivals in the world. He captured the Best Director Award at Cannes with “Kinatay” (2009), which made a name for himself in Japan. However even before this, the Focus on Asia Fukuoka International Film Festival introduced his masterly skills to Japan by showing “Tirador” (English title: Slingshot) in 2008. Our film festival has shown the following films directed by Brillante Ma. Mendoza.
“Tirador” -English title: “Slingshot” (2007/ Philippines) shown in 2008
“Babcia”-English title: “Lola” (2009/ Philippines) shown in 2010
“Sapi”-English title: “Possession” (2013/ Philippines) shown in 2014
“Asian Three-Fold Mirror 2016: Reflections” (2016/Japan) shown in 2017

In the “Master Class”, we will ask Mr. Mendoza in detail about his unique techniques in filmmaking as well as his thoughts on motion pictures. There is no admission fee to take this class but you must fill out an application in advance to attend. Please fill out the application from the Event section of our official website. Deadline to fill out the application is September 12 (Thu.).
